The Personal
Happiness Index
How Bhutan's Approach to Happiness Can Transform You and the World Around You.
A personal book about what happened when I stopped measuring my life by the metrics that once defined it — and went looking for something Bhutan had already figured out.
ABOUT THE BOOK
From selling happiness to asking what it really means.
For twenty years, across Mexico, Western Europe, the US, Central America and Brazil, I worked in global marketing for Coca-Cola — helping build campaigns that promised happiness in a bottle. I had the career, the travel, the recognition. And still, something in me kept quietly collapsing.
In 2018, I left. Not out of rebellion, but because I couldn't shake the feeling that there had to be something more meaningful than market share and performance reviews. That same year, my brother invited me on my first trip to Bhutan. I went as a tourist and came back with a question I couldn't put down.
Seven years later, in 2025, I went back — this time deliberately, camera in hand, to understand how a small country in the Himalayas had built its entire model of progress around Gross National Happiness instead of GDP. I sat down with Dasho Lhatu, Executive Director of the GNH Centre in Bhutan, and spent days in monasteries, villages and conversations that reframed everything I thought I knew about happiness.
This book is what came out of both trips. It's part memoir, part introduction to Bhutan's philosophy of Gross National Happiness, and part something I built myself: the Personal Happiness Index (PHI) — an adaptation of Bhutan's nine dimensions of wellbeing into a framework anyone can use to look honestly at their own life.
WHAT TO EXPECT
A journey, a framework, and an invitation to look.
- A real story, not a theory — twenty years in global marketing, a personal unraveling, and two trips to Bhutan seven years apart.
- A conversation with Dasho Lhatu, Executive Director of the GNH Centre in Bhutan.
- Original photography from Bhutan, 2025.
- An introduction to Bhutan's nine dimensions of Gross National Happiness, and how they translate into everyday life outside Bhutan.
- The Personal Happiness Index (PHI) — the same framework behind the test on this site — explained from the ground up.
- No promises of transformation. Just what I found looking — and an invitation to look at your own life the same way.
THE PHOTOGRAPHY
Bhutan, seen through the same journey that shaped the writing.
Every photograph in the book was taken in Bhutan in 2025, on the same trip that shaped the writing — monasteries, villages, faces, and the light that made me pick up a camera in the first place. Nothing in these pages is stock photography. They were made to sit alongside the words, not decorate them.
